The brand-new US black metal quintet from New Jersey and Texas known as Disperser recently unleashed a three-track digital curse simply titled Demo 2021, which evokes a melancholy atmosphere tinged with agony and despair. While adopting some of the characteristics and traits of 90s black metal and leaning towards some well-known themes and motifs relating to said genre, there is a deep-seated sense of longing and something personal and heartfelt to their compositions that adds a unique touch to the song material, and it simply walks its own musical path. As to the meaning of the group’s name, the moniker is meant to signify “a wolf that leaves its pack, strikes out on its own and has no social territory”.
Ranging from harsh and utterly morose to somewhat calm and borderline hypnotic, Demo 2021 is an inspired and inspiring piece of work that leaves very little to be desired in terms of substance and dynamics. Fans of depressive black metal and hauntingly bleak music in general ought to give this raw-sounding output a listen. The band is currently working on a full-length assault.
