Young Martyrs Share Vulnerable ‘Sugar On My Tongue’

Bristol-based Young Martyrs return on 8th May with new single ‘Sugar On My Tongue’ and accompanying music video, the second offering from their forthcoming third studio album Might Just Be Enough, due this summer. It’s a singalong, and a great track to have on a road trip.

Hot on the heels of April’s ‘Is There Anybody Out There?’, the new track was recorded and produced at Real World Studios in Bath and Indefra Studios in Frome, with co-production from Sebastian Brice and engineering from Ben Koch. Mastering came courtesy of Christian Wright (Ed Sheeran, Franz Ferdinand, Blur, Laura Marling) at Abbey Road Studios.

One of three songs on the album written by lead guitarist Rich Beeby, ‘Sugar On My Tongue’ explores the desperately vulnerable yet universally relatable territory of undeclared feelings and physical longing.

Beeby on the lyrics: “The band rocks and rolls in this song so it needed a lyric that’s raw and does most of its thinking from the neck down. It’s about the visceral feelings of unspoken attraction and physical longing, and how those feelings might be suppressed, but can eventually develop into fantasy or obsession. It’s really down to the listener to decide if surrendering to that intoxicating lustfulness should be avoided or celebrated.”

The music video, shot and directed by Rhys Davies of Furball Films, was filmed in two of the band’s hometown haunts: rehearsal space Firebird Studios and local takeaway Lick’n Chick’n, a nod to where they first started building their reputation. It follows two lead actors portraying unrequited adoration and the slow warming of the object of unwanted desire.

Might Just Be Enough is due this summer. Stick ‘Sugar On My Tongue’ on the road trip playlist and let it earn its place.
