Motörhead have released an animated lyric video for ‘Built For Speed’, the second single taken from Cameron Webb’s brand new remix of Orgasmatron, ahead of the album’s 40th anniversary edition on 6 November.
Webb produced six Motörhead studio albums, and he built the remix from the original multitracks. The 1986 album’s production by Bill Laswell has always divided opinion, and both Lemmy and Phil Campbell felt some of its power had been lost.
Webb says his approach was about revealing, not replacing: “Lemmy and Phil both said they didn’t like the original mix, so I thought about what they might have asked me to do if they were sitting next to me… The aim was never to replace the original, but to reveal more of what was inside it.”
He also remembers his first encounter with the record: “My brother introduced me to Orgasmatron when I was 14 years old. I heard the song and thought, ‘Is this even music?’ It was like the devil coming through my cassette tape. And I loved it.”
The 40th anniversary edition comes as a deluxe 3LP bookpack and a 2CD set. Both include the half speed remastered original, the Cameron Webb remix, studio rehearsals and outtakes from 1985, and the complete 1986 BBC Radio 1 Friday Rock Show session, featuring ‘Killed By Death’, ‘Orgasmatron’, ‘Doctor Rock’ and ‘Deaf Forever’. A 1LP edition of the original album on transparent violet vinyl is also available.
Orgasmatron gave us ‘Deaf Forever’, ‘Orgasmatron’ and ‘Built For Speed’, three songs that stayed in the live set for years. Hearing them with Lemmy‘s bass pushed forward is a very tempting prospect, and keeping the original alongside the remix feels like the respectful way to do it.
